CHECK US OUT IN THIS WEEKS TACOMA WEEKLY - Section C, page. 5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIuVLp30j4Q

Darxiide is a group of young rappers between the ages of 19 and 22. The five core members are Dru Breeze, Shame, Savi, Sicill and tVicious. These five have been together for about a year. Other variations of the group have been around for several years.

Their name refers to the untapped shroud of mystery in Northwest music, with xii referring to the 12th man of the Northwest.

The group’s press kit is more about their hometown than the rappers. It points out Tacoma is the birthplace of the late singer Bing Crosby and hometown of people we are proud of, such as Seattle Seahawks star Marcus Trufant and glass art icon Dale Chihuly, and some we are not, such as serial killer Ted Bundy. The list of interesting facts sounds like something from a chamber of commerce, noting the excellent views of Mount Rainier from much of the city, the line of trucks Toyota named after the city, Stadium High School being the setting of the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” starring the late Heath Ledger and the installation of a fiber optic network in the late 1990s.

At 22, Sicill is the oldest member. Savi was 14 when he met Sicill. Shame and Dru Breeze met when they were 14. They attended Wilson High School, where they participated in the Hilltop Artists in Residence program, in which young people learn glass blowing.

Their songwriting process begins with a beat. Each member writes the lyrics he raps on a song.

“Everybody brings a piece of the puzzle, then we fix and polish everything into a complete song,” Savi said.

They do all their own recording and mixing in the basement of a house not far from Hilltop. Their new CD is titled “XII: The Mixtape.” They have released five prior full-length albums, but Sicill said this is the first one they have done right.

Darxiide has performed at open mics at Jazzbones and Shakabrah Java and done gigs at 54th Street Bar and Grill and Happy Days Casino in Lakewood.

Savi noted it is difficult to book shows at clubs because of bad experiences with previous rap acts.

“They drew crowds that were more into fighting and arguing than listening to music and having a good time,” he said. “We are trying to change that.”

There are not many venues or shows for rap, Sicill added.

“We have to make our own,” Sicill said.

Savi said there is little recognition on a national level for the rap scene here, even though he feels there are many talented local rappers.

“We are trying to bring attention to Tacoma,” Dru Breeze remarked.

Darxiide will play a free show at 54th Street Bar and Grill at 9 p.m. on Jan. 16, at all-ages venue Viaduct in Tacoma on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. with a $7 cover charge and 54th Street Bar and Grill at 8 p.m. on Feb. 13 with a $6 cover.

Thorax OTool on "House Prices"

There isn't going to be a "recovery", there is going to be a stabilization.
For the last 13 decades, housing prices (residential only) have stayed pretty close to a 3:1 to 4:1 price-to-median income ratio. We saw a rise in the 20s, the 80s and of course, the 00s... not to mention a fall on the 30s, late 50s and early 90s.
During this last boom, prices went to 6:1 and beyond. With Tacoma's median income at just under $40K, the median house price should be between $120K to $160K... not the $250K we've been seeing. Ya gotta make at least $75K Notice I use the median. Obviously house prices in Hilltop would be lower than North end simply because of the disparity in income.

So, we're not going to see some sort of magic "V" shaped recovery; we're seeing a return to normalcy. The euphoria, recklessness and ignorance that let real estate bubble to levels unprecedented in US history are gone, they are dead until the current generation is dead and gone or too old to make their voices heard... like our great-grandparents who raised our own grandparents during the depression. It's a cycle.
Jobs will eventually return, retail will eventually heal. But housing will be a long "L" shaped recovery. Prices will fall to their pre-bubble levels (that is 1999 or so), and it will be like it should have always been... a good job, good credit and 20% down, traditional 30 or 15 year fixed mortgages.

The "bottom" is a long ways away, we won't see it until prices have come in-line with historical trends and people finally start seeing housing as what it is: a home, a dwelling. Not an investment/get-rich-quick scheme. Even the median prices in Seattle will fall easily to their proper ratio, which is in the $150-$200K range.
For anyone who thinks there is a rebound in sight should not be drinking the kool-aid. Layoffs, increasingly tight credit and a massive oversupply of housing will keep prices low for years. Nowhere is immune, folks. There's 10,000 high-paying jobs disappearing between Microsoft and Boeing... that will hurt confidence and the potential buying pool. It's gonna be a rough ride for a while, but it's necessary to return things to equilibrium... painful as it may be.

Who wants to predict when house prices for Tacoma will hit their bottom? I've got my money on about 6 months from now (at least a month after Seattle recovers). Seattle apparrently has the fastest recovering market, and I'll bet that recovery will ripple through the rest of the state.

Here's hoping...

Pretty crazy, and I really can't imagine what that family is going through right now. I doubt it will end monster trucks coming to Tacoma though.

The Dome and the event promoters will probably have a higher insurance bill, and they may install some sort of added protection for future shows. Sure it's gonna cost 'em more, but I'll bet the money made from these events makes it worthwhile.

Months and months ago someone said it was going to be some sort of live music and coffee place, this still going on?

I've been a vegetarian for as long as I can remember.
Since someone asked in another part of the forum where a good place for a vegetarian breakfast was, I decided to recommend some places that I know of that cater to vegetarians. The key to living as a veggie, is that you must understand that not everybody wants to be one. so it's to be expected that not every restaurant has veggie options per say, but they will gladly oblige you when you ask for no meat.

Breakfast:

Shakabrah- They offer to switch out tofu for any scramble dish on the menu. I always used to get a dish called the Chrissy (sp?) with tofu instead of eggs. They marinate the tofu in some sort of amazing garlic type stuff. it's a must try.

PSP (Puget Sound Pizza)- I believe they have 1 or 2 veggie egg scrambles on the menu, but i always order the schuster parkway sans sausage.

Hob Nob- most any dish can be ordered without meat. though, be wary if you are in a waffle kind of mood they are 6 bucks each. I once ordered 2 waffles without knowing and i paid over 12 bucks. what a waste. : /

Quickie Too- this place is completely vegan and the owners are Rastafarian, so they don't serve anything with chemical additives, salt, or anything that involves canning or drying. *correct me if I'm wrong.
you should definitely check out their Sunday brunch. it takes a while to get the food out, but it is well worth the wait.

For Lunch/Dinner:

Antique Sandwich shop-they have a vegetarian sandwich option, and again most things can be switched out.

East and west cafe- southeast asian cuisine with many vegetarian options.

gateway to india- indian cuisine with a few veggie options and some vegan options.

marlenes market- many many many vegetarian options here. also lots of vegan, gluten free and soy free foodstuffs.

Wendy's 2-Vietnamese restaurant with kick-ass garlic tofu.

Nightlife:

Tempest- a variety of veggie nibbles and things that can be asked to be converted to veggie.

Red Hot- Yes indeedie, they offer veggie dogs. However, you might want to ask for 2 veggie dogs in your 6th ave strut because the v-dogs they offer are a little on the skinny side.

Melting Pot-easy as pie, when you're hitting them up for happy hour just stick to the cheese course or the chocolate course. *do make sure to specify what kind of broth they are using.

...okay that's all I got for now.. please add more if you think of any i've missed!
