Visiting the satellite of satellite coffee

3301775603_693d2e172f
I’m known to drink coffee late at night… so I decided to take a stroll down 6th ave in hope of catching the new Satellite Coffee that just opened inside of Masa still open. It was about 6:50pm on Sunday when I finally arrived to my surprise they still were open! I read earlier on southsoundeats.com that they would only be open till like 5 but when asked they said they are still testing the waters out. Late night coffee for the win! As I sat outside in their table and chairs enjoying my coffee I got many strange looks. It was clear that this was something very new to Tacoma, unlike many other developed cites Tacoma has very few coffee places with outdoor seating at 7pm. Sitting their revealed another joy of 6th ave becoming more active at night. Beggers!

Sure is fun to sit back and watch Tacoma grow while enjoying a coffee next to the liquor store.3304008714_35de607544

Orange Tree Frozen Yogurt Arrives!

yumFor all of you wishing you could get a taste of the infamous Pinkberry – Orange Tree Yogurt might just be the next best thing! A self-serve frozen yogurt oasis has set up shop in the new Nordstrom wing of the Tacoma Mall. You can find everything from Green Tea flavored yogurt to more traditional fruity flavors like strawberry and rasberry. You also have your choice of toppings – Everything from mochi balls to fresh fruit, granola, Fruity Pebbles, and lots in between. Their fruit is super fresh and their mochi balls are to die for.

Newbies may find some confusion upon entering. Let me give you some pointers before you go:

1.) Do not order at the front counter. Proceed to the right of the frozen yogurt machines and grab a cup.

2.) Choose your flavor wisely. This is not your typical super rich and creamy soft serve you get from McDonald’s. Some of the flavors are tart, think YOGURT! The fruity flavors are safe for noobs. However, the vanilla and plain are fairly tart in flavor.

3.) Before you fill your cup up to its brim – Remember you need room for toppings you silly goose! Also remember that you are paying $0.35 per ounce. It adds up quick once you add your toppings. Don’t be surprised if you leave there with $6.00 worth of frozen yogurt. Although, I find it absolutely worth it.

4.) Don’t make the same mistake I did when I first went to a self-serve froyo shop … I went a little overboard with kiwi and vanilla yogurt, mochi balls, kiwi fruit, strawberries, Fruity Pebbles AND granola. Try and make a somewhat logical flavor combination when you choose your toppings.

I am absolutely thrilled that Tacoma has been graced with a healthy alternative to Coldstone and Baskin Robbin. So let’s try and keep this one around awhile by showing a little love :]

The Mandolin on a Saturday morning

Mandolin Cafe on a Saturday morning
Parking lot full? Don’t let it deter you; it’s normal and it’s worth the short walk.

The Mandolin Cafe, located at 3923 South 12th St., is one of Tacoma’s little gems. Emilie at One Foot on Shore puts it well: “the dinky exterior completely camouflages a cavernous and cozy space.”

Step inside the Mandolin and you are surrounded by eclectic artwork in a soothing palette, all kinds of interesting furniture, and live music of all varieties. Oh, and don’t forget those mandolins, sitting on shelves and painted into artwork on the walls.

There’s always a place to sit in this cafe, despite the crowds that typically gather for a live music performance or a group meet-up such as the Tacoma French Club. Inspiration and great conversation aren’t hard to come by here.

The Mandolin is unassuming, comforting, and laid-back. On any given Saturday morning, friends gather, writers tap away on their laptops, students study, and the French club fills the air with conversation.

The loose leaf tea is fresh, the coffee is local, and the pastries are delicious. If you’re lucky enough to score a seat on the couch, you’ll have the best seat in the house during a live performance–and the first chance to drop a tip into the ceramic cavity of a Greek head statue.

POTM: Masa Happy hour Tacos are good

Pictures of the Moment:
Masa Tacos
I had a chance to swing by Masa the other day for some happy hour action. Ordered the pulled pork and pineapple tacos and the veggie. Both were basically amazing. Not a super great happyhour deal but it tasted good.

Best Pho in Tacoma

phoPho is amazing. There I said it. I honestly used to not be a big fan but I learned to love it because its just so cheap and fast! I was mostly familiar with the Seattle joints so I’ve started checking out the places near me. The only place I’ve been to so far was that pho place on like 11th and mlk… Service was fast and the pho was pretty good I usually make it taste the same by adding cocksause though ha. Who knows maybe the gang at Southsoundeats will critique it sometime.

Anyways what are some of the best pho places in Tacoma? I heard the one by the Tacoma mall is pretty good, have any insider tips?

Satellite Coffee

I’m sure you’ve been here its that gem located on Division and I…. you probably get caffeinated here daily if you don’t go to Blackwater. It’s small and can fit about 5 comfortably you won’t find 10 laptopheads sitting drinking drip all day instead it has more of a beehive feel. People in and People out. Why do I like Satellite Coffee? I’d say because there is no bullshit… I’m constantly annoyed by some of the coffee-flys at other coffeeshops but here at Satellite there is little of this :) If you enjoy good coffee give Satellite a try, they have sorta slow service because they are perfectionists but thats ok for me.

Whats in a Lavender L’amour Tacoma?

As necessities become more costly our entertainment budgets get smaller and smaller. One of my favorite drinks is the Lavender L’amour from the Monsoon Room. Anyone care to share the recipe as I can’t justify the cost of them anymore :(

Feel free to comment the recipe anonymously

Thanks!

The Hub, Tacoma

So its about 6:00pm here at the hub. You can smell the paint is still drying and this place looks amazing. They added divisions creating 3 or 4 little areas. This was key since it was the death of the St Helens Cafe. The bar can sit about 20 and there is an additional side bar that can sit 7. On tap they have all of the traditional harmon beers and for you hard-a types it looks like I see a bottle of jagermeister, whiskey, Kalua, and some other bottles I can’t read. They have a lot of staff too, just looking around I counted 15, wouldn’t be surprised if there were an additional five hiding in the back.

So far I’m extremely impressed. They have it all, food, beer, and wifi. Its not busy at all either if your worried about coming here because of the crowd don’t be there is lots of seating. (Night painting Chris Sharp)

Update: The Bartender rocks, he just denied some dude that just got out of jail that tried to use his county check to buy a few beers.

Top of Tacoma Bar soon to offer amazing food

A little dodo bird has come out of extinction and whispered that next door the Top of Tacoma bar is just about ready to open up an all ages food spot. The kitchen looks pretty amazing with all stainless steal appliances and a little hole in the wall to serve the bar.

This little dodo also mentioned that they will be offering a selection of soups, paninis, and more. Keep your eyes peeled since it is hoping to open before Christmas.

Tacoma Vegetarian Hookups

I’ve been a vegetarian for as long as I can remember.
Since someone asked in another part of the forum where a good place for a vegetarian breakfast was, I decided to recommend some places that I know of that cater to vegetarians. The key to living as a veggie, is that you must understand that not everybody wants to be one. so it’s to be expected that not every restaurant has veggie options per say, but they will gladly oblige you when you ask for no meat.

Sushi Revolution (Video+Pics)

Last night a couple of friends tipped us off to the grand opening of the newest sushi joint in town “Sushi Revolution.” Upon hearing that this is the type of place that involves a carosel and rediculous amounts of sushi up for human consumption, we were pretty excited.
