Tollefson Plaza Conquered: Secrets Revealed

April 30, 2008

Inspired by the Frost Park take over I rallied team In-Tacoma and we made our way down to the cement deadzone in Downtown Tacoma Called Tollefson Plaza. We decided to hold an experiment to see what would happen if Tollefson Plaza was turned into a real world wiki for a day. (A wiki is website or similar online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively.)

With a large bucket of chalk in hand we began to draw in the center. I created the message “imagine.” very large in the center to get people to start thinking about this space and with the period its quite actionable. We then created a defined chalk area with the word “free” around it and a simple task of “Have Fun”.

We were interested to see if people would actually participate.

Leaving the park we came back 2 hours later to find that people were indeed participating and I had to add more chalk for people to use. We did this throughout the entire day.

Conclusion:

  • People are ready to use this space
  • People do some pretty wild things in this space like, take off there pants and jump in the fountain.
  • Over 30 people participated and only one chalk penis
  • People that wrote inappropriate things were moderated by others
  • Security won’t stop you from chalking
  • People created waypoints to help people find things in Tacoma, arrows pointing to the cupcake place for example.

Tacoma help me find this woman

April 11, 2008

Hello Tacoma, yesterday while walking 6th avenue I met a very kind retired woman who lives in a retirement home not far from Jazzbones. She really wanted her photo taken and she explained to me about a camera she once owned. I complemented her on her beautiful eyes and asked if she was once a model. She told me she was for some friends and that she would love to see these photos. When asked what she was looking at she said, “The Heavens”.

This is where I need your help Tacoma,

The only information I have is that her name is Linda/Lynda and that she is at some retirement place in the area called “Northwest _____”.

I would love to hand deliver her some copies of these photos. Please Help :)

The Hub, Tacoma

April 1, 2008

So its about 6:00pm here at the hub. You can smell the paint is still drying and this place looks amazing. They added divisions creating 3 or 4 little areas. This was key since it was the death of the St Helens Cafe. The bar can sit about 20 and there is an additional side bar that can sit 7. On tap they have all of the traditional harmon beers and for you hard-a types it looks like I see a bottle of jagermeister, whiskey, Kalua, and some other bottles I can’t read. They have a lot of staff too, just looking around I counted 15, wouldn’t be surprised if there were an additional five hiding in the back.

So far I’m extremely impressed. They have it all, food, beer, and wifi. Its not busy at all either if your worried about coming here because of the crowd don’t be there is lots of seating. (Night painting Chris Sharp)

Update: The Bartender rocks, he just denied some dude that just got out of jail that tried to use his county check to buy a few beers.
