Big Win For Skating Downtown
Tacoma offers many legal skateparks around town but nothing downtown. As more and more skaters have come downtown to skate all of this beautiful new pavement many businesses started to install ugly skateboard lugs. Skateboard lugs are basically knobs screwed into curbs and ledges every 3 feet or so to deter people from using the ledges for skating.
These things are not cheap and are quite an eyesore to me. A group by the name of “Skaters for Public Skateparks” has partnered with Metro Parks to work with them to create places to skate in their parks with the condition that local advocates from Skaters for Public Skateparks must become official park stewards through the parks department’s volunteer program. This means that these volunteers will recommend repairs throughout the park having to do with skating. This is a big win towards creating a downtown that all groups of people will enjoy. Below is a render of what a $500 dollar cement manual pad would look like in one of our parks.

Very good news. Let’s hope some of this sort of install will be allowed over in Tollefson. Place is screaming for activity.
